Nowadays I see all these kids running around, thinking like they’re little Einsteins, putting together this one with that one, and him and her, and this and that, like it’s nothing. Ach. Those kids couldn’t put a monkey together with a banana. It takes more than a phonebook to be a shadchan. It has to be in your blood; in your kishkes. And the aggravation that comes with it? Don’t get me started! You think its fun getting a phone call at the 3 am after you’ve just spent the night drinking prune juice? And it’s always the same, some 48 year old’s mother telling you that the girl you set up with her precious Yankele is no good because she’s cross-eyed, has a lame leg, and believes that in a past life she was a Mongolian warlord who held the record for villages sacked and plundered. So sue me! Look lady, I told her, your son could do a lot worse than marrying someone with an entrepreneurial spirit! Tzurus, I got. Ulcers, I got. Appreciation, that’s what I’m still waiting for…………… Anyway, just look at the last job I did. You look at the pictures of them now and think, perfect! I’d have seen it a mile away. Shoita. Yeah, now you see it because of everything that I’ve done. But if you saw them before, whoa boy, that’s a whole another story. …………The boy wasn’t so bad. I ain’t gonna lie, I’ve had better. But believe me, I’ve also had a lot worse. He was a nice boy. Polite, decent-looking, had a good job. Normally, descriptions like that and the guy is married with 7 kids before he hits 20. Normally is right, but this wasn’t normally. This was different. I’ll tell it to you straight: the guy had this thing for pirates. I don’t know why. Maybe he got bitten by a dog when he was younger or went on that ride in Disney land one too many times, whatever. I don’t know why. I don’t get paid to know why. All I knew was that he looked and talked like a pirate. Always with scarves and eye patches and stuffed parrots all over his body. And when he talked, oy, it was horrible. It was always “Yarr” this, “shiver me timbers” that, and “bloody hell” this other thing. It made you wish that Blackbeard would take you for his next wife, if you know what I mean. ………….Nah, this boy was no Charlton Heston, but you work with what you have and I went to work. I got him cleaned up and made him look and talk somewhat decent. It took time, believe me. What, you think Chagall made all those expensive pictures overnight? ………….. And all the while, I was looking. I knew that this boy had to have a special girl, so I kept my eyes open and my ears close to the ground. And then one day, I saw her and I knew. No, she wasn’t also a pirate. That would’ve been too easy. She was an artist of something or other. I remember the first time I talked to her she was wearing black. And I mean black. Black dress, black beret, black eyeliner, black copy of the complete works of Shakespeare. You name it, she had it: in black. Whatever gets your kicks, right? ………………She was an odd one in more ways than that though. I recall that she introduced herself as “a mute inglorious Milton. ” (If you had asked me then, I would have said she had lost more than just her paradise, if you know what I mean.) And talk about writing! Gevalt! She was always writing something. She carried this huge black notebook with her wherever she went and her hands were always smudged with this thick black ink from writing down all of her “beautiful and terrible descriptions of the world.” Meanwhile, I look inside and I see 297 poems about a decrepit teddy bear. (Why not about decrepit clowns, bunny rabbits, cotton candy, I don’t know why. I don’t get paid to know why.)………….Whatever. Bottom line, I saw her, thought she had potential, and helped her out. And what do you know? Six months later, they’re engaged and look halfway decent in the pictures. (I heard that they had some guy wearing a clown suit there when he proposed, but what can you do, right? You can’t help all the crazies.) …………..Yeah, it’s a hard way to make a living, but it’s a living. And when I see them smiling like that in the camera, it makes it all seem worth it. Mazel Tov.
