John Reuben, a Jewish prisoner is suing HM Prison Service, alleging that he was refused kosher food until he could “prove” he was Jewish – and that this meant he was without proper food for 19 days.

The inmate says he won £5,000 from the prison service in 2000 after the same thing happened – and is now seeking a ‘judicial review’ after being left without kosher food for a total of 19 days.

He says that on both occasions, prison workers said he had to ‘have his faith confirmed by a Rabbi’ before they could order kosher food for him – which costs around four times more than normal prison grub, around £8-a-day compared to an average of £2-a-day.
