Israel’s transportation minister, Yisrael Katz, announced on Wednesday that a new train station set to be built adjacent to Jerusalem’s Western Wall will be named after President Trump in honor of his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital as well as move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The new train station is apart of an extension of Jerusalem’s highspeed rail, which will soon reach the Western Wall.
“The Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jewish people, and I have decided to name the train station that leads to it after president Trump, following his historic and brave decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel,” Katz said.
The move to name the station after Trump comes just weeks after the president shocked the international community and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in a move that was widely praised by Israelis.
The international community has traditionally recognized Tel Aviv as Israel’s capital, while Israel has considered Jerusalem as its capital.
In May, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the wall during his trip to Israel.
