BDE: Rabbi Brutally Beaten in Ukraine Attack Succumbs To Injuries

Rabbi Mendel Deitsch, A prominent Chabad-Lubavitch emissary who was severely injured in a knife attack near a central train station in the western Ukrainian city of Zhitomir, has succumbed to his wounds. 

Deitsch, an Israeli-French national, was first taken to a local Ukranian hospital with serious head injuries, where he underwent emergency surgery, but then his family arranged for him to be airlifted to Israel through the Israeli consulate in Kiev. He died at Tel Hashomer Hospital in Ramat Gan on Saturday.

Ukrainian police had arrested four suspects in the attack of Rabbi Deitsch, who was brutally beaten and robbed. 

Deitsch, a, but stable condition in 

Two men and two women from the Carpathian Mountains region attacked Deitsch, 63, on the night of Oct. 6 or in the early hours of Oct. 7, stole his cash and cellphone, and left him bleeding and unconscious under a bridge near the train station, according to local reports in Ukrainian media. Deitsch suffered multiple head injuries and brain trauma.

The suspects returned to the city a week after the attack. They were identified and arrested by police on Oct. 17, Chabad.org reported.
