I am pleased and proud to share with you all the momentous occasion of Charlie’s forthcoming retirement from Hadassah Hospital next month.

My emotions are in an uproar as I look back 28 years ago when our dream to make Aliya was fulfilled and Charles Sprung was appointed as Head of the General Intensive Care Unit.
Although we both had trepidation as to the professional wisdom of making Aliya, our hearts were overflowing with excitement (and of course a bad case of nervousness and “guilt”) as we moved to Yerushalayim with our 4 kids. The happy ending of course is that today we can honestly say that our children have successfully adjusted to life in Israel and lead meaningful lives and have blessed us with 11 incredible grandchildren (so far…).

The biggest surprise of our Aliya, however, was that Charlie was able to fulfill his professional dreams. His clinical duties involved saving lives of Israelis as well as visitors to Israel, training hundreds of doctors in the field of intensive care and many of these students hold prestigious positions today throughout Israel. His research flourished as he tapped into the European Society and became active in the European Intensive Care Society, serving as its treasurer for many years. He also became involved in the field of medical ethics and end-of-life issues and participated in formulating important laws in the Knesset.

I can honestly say that I have never seen anyone who works harder than Charlie. He is focused, organized, confident, wise and sensitive. His CV is very impressive with over 300 publications and his reputation is solid and shining.

I am so proud to be his partner. Our son, Ari Sprung has prepared a video tribute to his Abba which includes greetings from some of the leading intensivists worldwide as well as from patients’ families.

Although he is retiring from his clinical duties, I am confident that Charlie will now have even more time to devote to his medical research and educational goals (and of course to his family).

בהצלחה
