Since today is the 17th of Tammuz, and we are all eagerly awaiting food, it important to know what is actually going on inside our bodies. What people do not know is that there are actually two different types of hunger. The first type is an actual physical need to eat, this is called hunger (and what we are experiencing today). The second form of hunger is called appetite- which is a person’s desire to eat. However, many mistake appetite with real hunger, so let’s break it down.
When one has real hunger they will feel physical signs such as- shakiness from low blood sugar, a headache, low energy, or a growling stomach. However, when one experiences appetite it has very different symptoms. Their mouth may begin to water, or they will even feel the textures of the food they are picturing on their palate. When appetite is aroused, it is actually eliciting an emotional response rather than a physical. Since appetite is controlled by the brain, one can control their appetite, while hunger they cannot.
Since hunger elicits physical changes in the body, it is important to break hunger on the right foods. To overeat after a fast, is much more dangerous than overeating any other time. One’s body needs time to readjust to digestion, and overeating after a fast can cause nausea, cramping, or even vomiting. Below is a list of different foods that are recommended to eat in the order given after a fast. Have an easy rest of the fast!
1. fruit and vegetable juices
2. raw fruits
3. vegetable or bone broths
